Are you wondering where the time went? Or maybe you are ready for normality to resume?! It can certainly be a time of mixed emotions for many as the Summer holidays draw to a close and families start to prepare for the return to school.

As exciting as returning to school can be, the classroom can take its toll on the spine, with long hours sitting and carrying heavy backpacks during the day. Sadly, this can make studying hard work and cause tension and pain. But the good news is there are simple things that children can do and parents and carers can encourage to help.

Here are 3 tips to keep the spine healthy and pain-free during the school year:

1. Choose the right backpack
Carrying heavy books daily can put stress through the spine and shoulder joints, especially if carried on one shoulder. Choose a backpack that will distribute the weight evenly across the back and shoulders, and encourage your children to wear both shoulder straps. Wearing the bag on the upper part of the back will offer further support and prevent slouching too.

2. Good study habits
Being mindful of posture while studying will help to reduce the tension on the spine. For example, trying to sit up straight at the desk instead of slouching, keeping both feet on the ground instead of crossed legged, and elevating screens or devices used in the classroom so they are just above the eyeline can create that comfort required to focus on the studies.

3. Make the most of the breaks
Getting outside on the breaks to run and play, or simply walking around the school will do wonders for the health of the spine and help restore energy levels too! The body thrives on movement, so try and encourage regular activity during the day.

By following these tips, your children or loved ones will be setting themselves up for a positive year ahead when it comes to the health of their spine. And the awareness of spine health and posture at an early age will certainly put them in good stead long term!
